LOLA's STORY
Lola was a young staffordshire bull terrier bitch who came to the attention of Doris Banham Dog Rescue after she had been taken into the vet by a member of the public.
A gentleman had been walking his dog alongside a canal when he found this little scared staffy who was absolutely soaking wet - it is thought she may be been thrown into the canal.
The gentleman attempted to coax Lola to him but in her extreme state of fear and terror, she ran into the road and was hit by a car.
The man took Lola to the vet where, by good luck, a Doris Banham volunteer was. Doris Banham immediately offered Lola safety within their rescue.
An appeal went out for a transport run to take Lola to Doris Banham's kennels and a lady stepped up to offer to do the run. This volunteer was thoroughly checked out - she was a co-ordinator and fosterer for another rescue. She said she would keep Lola overnight and take her to the kennels as she had another dog to pick up the following day.
The next day, 30th December, Doris Banham got a TEXT from this volunteer saying that she had lost Lola in woodland in Doncaster. The search then began to try and find Lola.
Volunteers were out day and night trying to find Lola, putting posters up, speaking to locals and knocking on doors.
For 10 days, these dedicated people searched high and low for Lola whilst the transporter did nothing to help.
On the 11th day, it was discovered that Lola was not lost and was nowhere near Doncaster - the transporter had surrendered her to a pound in Halifax as a stray. She was was put down just the day before this information was discovered as the pound believed she was just another unclaimed stray.
As a tribute to Lola's memory, Doris Banham have set up "Lola's Legacy" to urge fellow rescues to please save a staffy from the pound in which Lola was inadvertantly put to death.
We need everyone to support this appeal by pledging to save a staffy or to donate funds to enable rescues to carry out this task in Lola's memory.
If you are another rescue that can offer a space for a staffy or crossbreed please email trudie.james@yahoo.co.uk.
All rescues we work with MUST BE non- destruct, vaccinate, neuter and home check any new homes.
If you are a member of the public wishing to donate to get other dogs to safety in Lola's memory please donate what you can.
We want to keep Lolas memory alive and save dogs from a pound we didn't work with before so she didn't die in vain.
