Angel

An angel came to be with us this Christmas.

two days left before PTS

With only two days left before she was due to be Put To Sleep (PTS) in a UK pound there was little doubt that she was going to die. Nine years old with an hugely extended stomach and sparse fur - placed the odds against someone coming to rescue her from death. This sophisticated elderly lady who was clearly in discomfort had trouble just walking. She could only hope that someone would see past her age, looks and disabilities to invite her to live the latter part of her life with them being loved and cared for.

The word went out about her plight, it looked bleak that anyone would come to her rescue as apart from everything previously mentioned, there was not even a photo of her that could be shown. One hundred and forty miles away Claire heard of this elderly dog's plight and offered to unconditionally provide a foster home for this lady. Claire did not care what she looked like or how old she was, a life is a life, every life counts. With time quickly running out there were still two more obstacles to overcome, how to transport her from the pound to her new foster home and to find someone that would be able to cover her veterinary treatment costs and back her up with a full rescue plan.

Doris Banham Dog Rescue was approached and became quickly involved, Annabel a volunteer rescue driver instantly offered to collect and deliver to Claire which involved a round trip toward 400 miles. Doris Banham Dog Rescue also offered to provide the full rescue backup for this elderly female while she is with Claire in her foster home.

Annabel arrived at Claire's safely, it was hard for Claire to hold back the tears as this elderly dog came through her door clearly struggling to walk as she moved toward the special meal and water that Claire had prepared her. As Claire watched whilst the food and water were being consumed she gave this wonderful dog her dignity back by dispensing of the pound number that she was know by and giving her a name. It wasn't hard for Claire to pick her name - in front of her was a dog that had clearly suffered for some time yet showed no sign of anger at all, a dog that was clearly sophisticated, gentle and long suffering, Claire gave her new name and dignity by naming her ' Angel ' as clearly an angel had come to be with us.

Angel at her new foster home

After eating her special meal and drinking large amounts of water, Angel asked to go out to relieve herself. She then came back inside and lay down clearly in discomfort but without muttering a single moan. Truly a special lady who deserves to live the latter part of her life being loved and cared for, a special lady who would have now been Put To Sleep (PTS).

The veterinary treatment has already started to assess why she has an extended stomach, fur loss and needs such a huge intake of water, at least now she is safe and Claire has already fallen in love with her.

Angel is just one of the many dogs that face being Put To Sleep every week in UK pounds.
